REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment
* Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
* Demonstrated teaching ability, with some classroom teaching/training experience
* Demonstrated experience integrating new technologies into the development and delivery of information services
* Familiarity with and commitment to the integration of experiential learning into the classroom experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* At least one year of experience working in reference and/or instruction in an academic or special library
* Experience working with the scientific research community, with an understanding of the research enterprise
* Subject background and/or work experience in the sciences (preferably agricultural or life sciences) or in a science library

Principal duties:

Steenbock Library is seeking an energetic, innovative, and service-oriented librarian to participate in a wide range of library services and programming, including information literacy instruction, subject liaison work with faculty and graduate students, outreach, and reference services. Principal duties include:

* Providing reference assistance in Steenbock's subject areas in person and using other appropriate technologies. This includes sharing in regular staffing of the library's reference desk and contributing to the campus-level collaborative reference programs and activities.

* Participating fully in the library's extensive library instruction and information literacy program and services. This includes:
- Teaching hands-on library skills classes and workshops.
- Working with other staff to explore the use of new models and technologies for delivering instruction and services.
- Working with faculty to integrate information literacy objectives and essential learning outcomes into the curriculum.
- Preparing and presenting instructional/training programs and web-based library course pages for undergraduate and graduate classes in assigned liaison departments and programs.
- Identifying writing- and research-intensive courses and other opportunities for library and information literacy instruction in liaison departments; promoting and providing instruction or specialized resources for undergraduate Capstone students' thesis research.

* As a member of the Steenbock Liaison Team, serving as library liaison for specific departments in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Liaison responsibilities include:
- Serving as principle library contact person for assigned departments.
- Developing and maintaining familiarity with the research and teaching needs of the departments, and bringing collection-related needs/issues to the attention of the selector for those departments.
- Communicating directly with faculty, staff, and graduate students in the departments about their information needs and library services.
- Meeting with new faculty and graduate students and acquainting them with library resources and services.
- Promoting tools and/or services that increase researcher productivity, and facilitating use of these tools and services.
- Offering individual and small-group consultation, reference services and instruction as needed.
- Creating, developing and maintaining web-based guides to information resources for assigned subject areas.

* Participating in professional development activities, including:
- Providing and participating in continuing education and professional development.
- Serving on Steenbock and General Library System committees, and on campus-level committees as appropriate.
- Participating in professional association activities and university governance.
- Contributing to publication and research.

Steenbock Memorial Library is the home library for the university's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine, and School of Human Ecology. Administratively part of the University of Wisconsin-Madison General Library System, Steenbock has 20 permanent staff members, with 8 librarians in the Information Services department. Steenbock provides user services and collection support for 27 academic departments and many specialized centers and programs related to agriculture, natural resources, life sciences, veterinary medicine, and human ecology. With over ten science libraries on campus, effective collaboration and coordination among library staff is essential for delivery of high-quality library services. Steenbock staff members participate fully in coordinated campus library initiatives and activities.

Steenbock Library provides a forward-thinking, collegial working environment for its staff, and a comfortable, high-use learning space for its patrons. Incorporating amenities such as an information commons, laptop checkouts, and group study rooms, Steenbock is popular with the general student population, including undergraduates living in nearby dormitories. Steenbock has a first-rate teaching space for conducting its information literacy programs. During the 2007-08 academic year Steenbock instruction librarians reached over 3300 learners in 270 classroom and individual library sessions.

As part of the campus-wide library system, Steenbock's collection includes over 120,000 books, hundreds of online and paper journal subscriptions, and an extensive government documents collection. Library users have access to over 350 online bibliographic databases, including an impressive variety of scientific resources.
