Degree and area of specialization:
BA required in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences or Natural Sciences that could lead to required expertise. MA or MS preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least two years of employment at a post-secondary institution in a position performing the following activities: provisioning of network-based instruction (video, audio, multimedia, web-based; primarily with Linux and/or Macintosh server OSes); instructional design and application of instructional technology. Experience also desired, but not required: familiarity with programming languages commonly used in network applications, especially those used in an academic setting (course management systems, presentation software, video and audio production tools); online and distance education, supervision of student employees.
Principal duties:
The Instructional Technology/Networked Services Consultant works within the Department of Learning
Support Services (LSS) within the College of Letters and Science to support the effective use of
instructional technologies for teaching and learning, with special emphasis on delivery of
instructional materials and services over the network. The consultant provides expert advice to
faculty and instructional staff, and to instructional technology support staff. The consultant
works to promote increased understanding of and support for the use of instructional technologies
across the College - with individual faculty, faculty groups, departments, professional degree and
certificate programs, and with other academic groups and initiatives.
The consultant
provides initial assistance to faculty, instructional design advice, instructional support
services, and back-end support for network services including server specifications, installation,
and maintenance. The consultant monitors emerging networked technologies in teaching and learning
to determine appropriate use in the College. The consultant must be able to work cooperatively
within teams, help plan and set priorities for the department's activities, and collaborate
effectively with campus groups. Because LSS is a relatively small department, other duties will
include helping with various online projects, having responsibility for a specific LSS facility or
service, collaborating with other LSS staff in managing LSS facilities and programs, and assigning
with general technical upkeep of the department.
Specifically, the Instructional Technology
Consultant will:
Consult/advise on the design of instructional technology applications
appropriate for a variety of teaching situations and delivery methods:
--Consult with
instructors to determine ways in which instructional technology can improve teaching and learning,
specifically in the are of network delivery
--Conduct individual and group training session
that teach participants how to successfully produce their own materials for network
delivery
--Introduce instructors to interesting new networked technologies as they arise, and
assist in their evaluation
--Utilize LSS and campus programs (such as IN TIME and Engage) to
assist faculty in developing technology-based instructional materials and
activities
--Collaborate with other LSS staff to provide technical expertise on instructional
projects
Ensure reliability of network-delivered instructional services, including both
static and dynamic webpages, streaming video, videoconferencing, etc. Specify, install, and
maintain servers used in the online delivery of course content. Participate in selection of the
instructional software used on those servers; install and maintain same.
Prepare proposals
and manage projects
--Assist in the preparation of project proposals, including scope, time,,
and cost estimates
--Oversee projects/coordinate efforts to assure timely completion, within
budget, and at expected levels of quality
Participate on Departmental and Campus
Committees
--Participate on committees to promote and coordinate instructional technology
efforts
--Attend and/or present at departmental and campus technology meetings and
workshops
--Participate in campus academic staff
governance
Miscellaneous
--Participate in professional development activities to keep up
with the latest technology trends
--Attend and/or present at local, regional, and national
conferences
--Participate in department and/or subdepartment meetings to coordinate and advance
LSS and College objectives
--Assist with or oversee other LSS facilities such as computer
labs, recording studio, AV equipment pool, etc.
--Complete and/or work with LSS staff to
complete administrative tasks and other duties as needed
--Other duties as assigned by the
