Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least one year experience in a higher educational setting counseling/advising students regarding
career development required. Two or more years experience preferred. Supervision of graduate
students in some specific programs requires completion of a Masters in
Counseling.
Experience should include:
- Knowledge of career development
theory/practice, job search strategies, employment trends, and current print and online career
resources.
- Experience advising individuals as well as designing, planning and presenting
programs and delivering workshops, ideally on career related topics.
- This person must be
proficient in using technology in delivery of services.
- Proven ability to counsel diverse
populations such as students of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, students of color, first
generation, LGBTQ, international students, returning adults and students with disabilities.

Knowledge of and experience in interpreting assessment tools utilized in career
decision-making.
- Ability to assist clients through career development process (self-
assessment, career exploration, decision making and job search strategies).

Principal duties:
Counseling and Advising (60%)
- Counsel and advise undergraduate, graduate students and recent
alumni individually and in groups on career exploration issues. Assist students with
self-assessment, career exploration, career decision making, implementing the job search and
lifelong career planning.
- Help students explore intersection of education to career goals,
understand and articulate the value of a liberal arts degree and prepare for transition out of the
university.
- Identify and address issues such as motivation, decision making, self esteem and
anxiety.
- Assess individual students' needs, help to set goals, make recommendations, and
evaluate students' progress.
- Assist students on resume/cover letters, interviewing skills,
and effective job search strategies.
- Work on internal office teams, e.g., web team, advising
team, employer development team, assessment team, and others of interest/need.
- Educate
students about the resources, tools and techniques necessary to succeed in implementing their plans
for after graduation.
Outreach and Program Development (20%)
- Serve as liaison,
establish and maintain strong partnerships with campus colleagues, faculty, and other advisors, L&S
Deans, Dean of Students, and Alumni Association to establish joint programs.
- Design programs,
make presentations, and lead workshops for academic departments, classes, student organizations,
and university groups to educate diverse constituencies about career issues.
- Assist with
developing and maintaining print and online office resources and publications.
- As part of
career services team, attend career fairs, as well as participate in other events and programs
sponsored by career services.
Supervision and Administration (20%)
- Supervise and
participate in hiring and training graduate practicum students enrolled in counseling, counseling
psychology, and student affairs graduate degree programs.
- Supervise undergraduate interns in
designated programs and/or career peers, as
needed
Additional Information:
This position requires:
- Some evening responsibilities such as workshop
delivery, career fairs and representing the office at campus-wide functions.
- Well-developed
cultural competence and ability to support a fully-inclusive working and learning environment is
required.
- Keeping current on employment trends and issues in career development, technology
and related topics through professional development opportunities.
