Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelors required, preferred in the areas of Graphic Design of web sites or Information Architecture
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Two years of relevant experience and skills in information architecture, graphic design of web
sites, web applications or relevant degrees in these areas such as graphic design or information
architecture.
HTML, PHP, MySQL, Active Server Pages (SharePoint) experience preferred.
Knowledge of web accessibility standards is required in particular Section 508
standards.
Experience in design of websites in a higher edcuation setting
preferred.
Must have the ability to speak and write clearly in English, work independently
and with a team, communicate technical concepts to staff members with differing degrees of computer
literacy, and be committed to pesonalized user
support.
Principal duties:
This position will support the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) in using the web
site to further its communication mission. The information architect (IA) will focus on three
primary areas:
1) OB/GYN public website and intranet architecture, design and maintenance, 2)
working with faculty and staff to adapt web in support of academic, research, administrative,
clinical and outreach activities, 3) keeps abreast of trends in higher education, web technologies,
accessibility and web security.
The IA will serve as the department liaison for all aspects
of website architecture and design in support of the instructional, research, administrative,
clinical and outreach missions of the school. The IA is expected to maintain the current website,
take a leadership role in the development and maintenance of a continually evolving web presence,
and enhance educational and research content including faculty, instructional, and distance
learning programs.
30% Web site project planning. Coordinate assessing, designing,
developing, implementing and troubleshooting site architecture to maximize usability for a variety
of needs; department publicity, news, academic information, faculty info, external and internal
communications. Maintain and upgrade the graphic design of the site. Design a graphical theme for
the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology websites. Further, the IA is responsible for working
with an administrative team to develop, coordinate and implement web policies. In addition to site
maintenance, the IA will establish an ongoing cycle of assessment, development and implementation
of web-based services and resources, including functionality, appearance, accessibility, content,
and usability testing. The IA provides coordination and support to department divisions, including
the design and delivery of appropriate training, in conjunction with other staff as needed. Serve
as point person for web site questions and perform site maintenance as needed to preserve content
accuracy. Ensure the site meets accessibility standards. Create supporting documentation and
training materials as needed.
20% Research and implement emerging technologies and adapt
them in ways that support the department missions of research, education and clinical activity.
Work with faculty and staff to make sure they have the training and the knowledge to effectively
use new web technologies in their research and education endeavors. Such endeavors include
research collaborations with other academic departments at the UW as well as other academic
institutions; Medical Student and Resident education programs; and clinical quality initiatives.
Possible current technologies: RSS feeds, blogs, course management systems, portals, etc. Create
supporting documentation and training materials as needed.
20% Provide examples from peer
academic institutions on how others use web technologies to support clinical, basic science and
translational research programs; outreach initiatives; and graduate, undergraduate, medical student
and resident educational missions to faculty and staff within the Department. In consultation with
faculty and staff, develop individualized strategies for inclusion of web technologies as they
relate to the research and education programs. Create supporting documentation and training
materials as needed. Meet and communicate with faculty and staff on individual research projects,
educational programs and/or outreach initiatives on how best to use web technologies in their
academic endeavors. Provide input into grant proposals on web technology needs for their projects.
10% Work with members of the department to enhance their web presence. Create easy to use
templates for use to make their pages appear to be natural extensions of the website. Train members
on editing web pages, site policies and web accessibility standards. Create supporting
documentation and training materials as needed.
10% Special projects. Webinars, graphic
design, multimedia projects, newsletter design and layout, PowerPoint templates, letterhead
templates, poster design and various illustrations.
5% Professional development. Stay
current on issues relevant to website architecture, design and research technologies that may
affect future website architecture or design.
5% As part of the information technology team,
provide backup assistance for other team members in the areas of computing and audio-visual
support.
