Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's of Science Degree required with specialization in biology preferred or related field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Two or more years of research laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting working in the areas of veterinarian, cellular or developmental biology. Experience in tissue culture and rodent care are essential. In addition, experience in molecular biology is highly desirable. Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential, as is the ability to adapt to various research methodologies and many work environments. Experience with computer applications such as Windows XP, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint are also essential.
Principal duties:
The University of Wisconsin Department of Surgery, Division of Transplantation is seeking a
qualified individual to fill the position of Research Animal Technician. The successful applicant
will be responsible for providing daily medical care for rodents used in biomedical research and
support. The incumbent will assist with the following duties: 1) islet isolation in rodents; 2)
surgical transplantation of islet cells; 3) diagnosing and treating injury and disease; 4) insulin
therapy; 5) daily blood glucose measurements; 6) assistance with biochemical assays to determine
the function of the engrafted cells; and 7) recovery of specimens for post-mortem analysis.
Microsurgery experience is desirable but not required.
In addition, this position requires
working within a biomanufacturing facility and the ability to learn current Good Manufacturing
Practice standards and procedures. The incumbent will also be on a rotating call schedule to assist
with human and nonhuman islet isolations.
Further specific duties: The incumbent will also
assist in the performance of pancreatic islet isolations from human and non-human sources; perform
experiments as defined by the principal investigator; provide support for general laboratory
management; and assist in the islet quality control assessment prior to transplantation.
In
addition, opportunities exist for further training and participation in specific areas of research
support based on experience or individual interests. In addition, the applicant will be expected to
regularly participate in journal club and group lab meetings. The successful applicant should have
initiative and be able to assist with designing and performing
experiments.
