Degree and area of specialization:
Master's Degree required in the area of communication, health sciences, education, or business.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Two to three years of relevant work experience in managing education programs and activities for diverse first generation college students from low income backgrounds and targeted minority students at higher education level. Knowledge and experience in the area of student services, recruitment, retention, academic advising, and post-secondary teaching is highly desirable. Familiarity with academic programs and resources on campus a plus. McNair Program Alumni are strongly encouraged to apply.
Principal duties:
UW- Madison Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair Scholars Program) is a
federally funded TRIO program that prepares undergraduate students from groups that are
traditionally under-represented in graduate education: first generation college students from low
income backgrounds and targeted minority students (African American, American Indian, and
Hispanic/Latino) for PhD studies. The McNair Scholars program helps to develop the academic skills
of each student and offers research skills development, graduate school career advising, and
professional development. The program offers scholars opportunities to conduct research, develop
the necessary interpersonal, analytical, and test-taking skills for graduate study and successful
completion of these students' doctoral degrees.
The Associate Student Services Coordinator
will independently and report regularly to the Associate Director of the McNair Scholars Program.
The Associate Student Services Coordinator will work to extend the benefits of the McNair Scholars
Program to undergraduates who are accepted into the program and assist the Associate Director with
the implementation of the McNair program. This is a student service
position.
Responsibilities include:
20% Work individually with each of the 25 McNair
Scholars to assess their academic, graduate study, career goals, needs and jointly develop
Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). These IEPs are updated as the scholars advance through the
program.
15% Counsel each of the scholars in writing their research abstracts, proposals and
reports and monitor their progress on research projects.
10% Counsel each scholar in their
graduate school application process, writing graduate application essays, locating sources of
funding for graduate education including post baccalaureate and graduate training grants, and
writing grant and fellowship proposals. (i.e. NSF, NIH, FLAS, FORD)
10% Develop and coordinate
colloquium and professional development workshops for scholars including contacting appropriate
speakers and presenters including GRE instruction and test taking skills.
10% Advise each
scholar in preparing their research papers for publication in research journals as well as for
conference presentations.
5% Work closely with faculty and academic advisors to monitor and
support student academic progress and meet monthly with the students to advise and monitor their
progress on research projects.
5%Counsel students in locating, selecting and participating in
appropriate summer research internships at institutions nationwide and also connect scholars to
campus and national resources that assist their professional and academic development.
5% Advise
each scholar in preparing their research papers for publication in research journals as well as for
conference presentations.
5% Develop and publish the bi-annual McNair newsletter.
5% Travel
with students to conferences and graduate school preparatory workshops and upon debrief students
and assist them with follow up activities.
3% Advise each scholar on preparing for their oral
and poster presentations; arrange practice and feedback sessions for presenters.
2% Interview
potential graduate student tutors and network with other colleges to arrange academic tutoring for
scholars when necessary.
2% Locate and arrange opportunities for national presentations for
scholars as part of their scholar professional development.
2% Maintain and update student
records database email lists, current scholar and alumni databases and the McNair website.
