BS/BA; background in Computer Science or related required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
At least 3 years experience with the Linux operating system is required. Familiarity with MacOS-X
and Windows operating systems is also
required.
Principal duties:
The Department of Physics is seeking a person with systems programming skills and the ability to
support faculty, researchers and graduate students with diverse IT backgrounds who work on a
variety of computing platforms. The successful applicant will:
Provide support for the
hardware and software computing needs of the department's researchers by maintaining and enhancing
servers, workstations, desktops, and laptops.
Assist graduate students, faculty, and
researchers in applying computing resources primarily to their research needs but also as
necessary, in conjunction with other departmental IT staff, assist in applying computing resources
to their instructional needs.
Implement strategies for systems programming and management
that primarily support the research needs of the department. Specific responsibilities include but
are not limited to:
-- Maintaining and enhancing the department's AFS file service, tape
backup, and mail servers based on Linux, and providing support for users with Linux, MacOS or
Windows desktops and clients.
-- Providing Unix systems server support for web based
research, instructional and departmental databases and resources.
-- Supporting the
research network. Collaborating with campus networking staff.
-- Developing, implementing,
and maintaining systems to respond to IT problems encountered by faculty, researchers and staff.
-- Researching, evaluating, purchasing, installing, monitoring and maintaining
workstations, and associated infrastructure to support department's research and instructional
activities.
-- Constructing and maintaining a Condor computing cluster with
approximately 100 Linux computers to increase high throughput computing.
-- Miscellaneous.
Working collaboratively with other department IT staff to support department's instructional needs.
Maintaining liaison with vendors and assisting in the negotiations of annual maintenance
contracts.
