Degree and area of specialization:
Minimum of BA or BS in a program evaluation related field (Social Science, public health, biostatistics); Masters preferred
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1-2 years experience with applied research and program evaluation; familiarity with NIH grant guidelines, policies and procedures; strong analytical and writing skills; ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically in written and verbal forms. Knowledge of program evaluation methods and techniques for measuring complex health sciences organizational change required. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and statistical analysis (SPSS or SAS) required. Experience in evaluation research techniques (both qualitative and quantitative methods), data management and analysis, writing and editing required. Experience providing staff support to multi-disciplinary teams required. Must be able to work well on a team. Candidate should be detail-oriented, and possess excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills
Principal duties:
This position will support the work of the Evaluation Office of the Institute for Clinical &
Translational Research, and will report to and work closely with the ICTR Evaluation faculty
director Dr. Paul Moberg and Evaluation researcher Dr. Jan Hogle. He/she will also collaborate
with the Institute¿s Marshfield Evaluation Coordinator, Jennifer Bufford. The Institute reflects an
exciting new NIH initiative in the School of Medicine and Public Health to transform research into
a continuum from investigation through discovery to translation into real-life community practice.
The Institute¿s goal, to link even the most basic research to practical improvements in human
health, requires candidates who are knowledgeable about and interested in the conduct and
application of program evaluation research across different settings within the university, various
communities, and across the state. The goal of the ICTR Evaluation Office is to provide multi-level
evaluation services to all stakeholders nationally, locally and internally. Our team incorporates a
utilization-focused, participatory approach that applies evaluation findings to priority-setting,
program accountability, and continuous quality improvement efforts. This position will assist with
and lend support to ICTR evaluation research activities in all areas, reporting mainly to Dr.
Hogle.
Specific duties include:
1. Applying knowledge of evaluation methods and data
management and analysis techniques, the Research Specialist supports the work of the ICTR
Evaluation Office, helps to implement the activities of the ICTR Evaluation Working Group, and
individual ICTR Members to assist with cross-component evaluation of ICTR, intra-component specific
evaluation activities, and national CTSA consortium evaluation tasks.
2. Interfacing with
ICTR components within the participating schools and colleges: Medicine & Public Health, Nursing,
Pharmacy, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine, and with ICTR/Marshfield as necessary to identify,
collect and analyze ICTR program evaluation data ¿ specifically, descriptive information about
investigators who use ICTR resources, and data related to how well and to what degree the Institute
is achieving its goals and objectives of providing support to medical researchers conducting
clinical and translational research at UW and at Marshfield. Survey data, qualitative interview
data, and process-level reporting information are examples of the kinds of program evaluation data
collected and analyzed by the Evaluation Office.
3. Under the direction of the ICTR
Evaluation Faculty Director and Evaluation Researcher, the Research Specialist will assist with
planning for and implementing Annual Member Surveys of investigators who have applied for
membership with the Institute (descriptive data about research activities and interests); analyzing
data about members who have used ICTR services; request-for-consult data collected via the ICTR Web
Portal; and service/resource tracking data collected by collaborating sections of ICTR to document
provision of research support services to investigators; and assisting in collection and analysis
of qualitative interview data with key personnel within ICTR.
4. Assisting with preparing
progress reports for the NIH and other regulatory agencies and committees (state, local,
federal).
5. Assisting the ICTR Evaluation Assistant Director and Evaluation Researcher by
serving as a liaison for communication for all parties involved in ICTR evaluation research
activities.
6. Other evaluation-related duties as
required.
