Degree and area of specialization:
BS required. Must be either a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or Anesthesiologist's Assistant. Willing to consider board eligible graduates.
License/certification:
CRNA (certified or board eligible) and Wisconsin RN license, or AA (certified or board eligible for certification).
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Graduates from nurse anesthesia schools and AA programs are encouraged to apply.
Principal duties:
At the University of Wisconsin Department of Anesthesiology the practice of anesthesiology
encompasses a medically directed team approach involving faculty anesthesiologists, anesthesiology
fellows, residents, interns, medical students and clinical anesthetists. In this department the
ability to provide high quality anesthesia care to a complex patient population, working within
this team anesthesia concept is the basic requirement of Clinical Anesthetists at all levels.
Clinical Anesthetists will perform their duties under the medical direction provided by the UW
Department of Anesthesiology faculty anesthesiologists. Clinical anesthetists' duties
include:
- The immediate attendance of patients undergoing anesthesia or monitoring for surgical
and medical procedures
- The performance and documentation of preanesthetic evaluations
- The
development of an anesthetic plan in collaboration with the anesthesiologist
- The
administration of anesthetic drugs and agents as prescribed by the anesthesiologist
- The
monitoring and measurement of physiologic variables during anesthesia and recovery
- The
maintenance and application of various techniques for physiologic maintenance, measurement and
evaluation in the operating room
- Facilitation of emergence and recovery from
anesthesia
- The performance and documentation of postoperative assessment after an
anesthetic
- Participation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, particularly airway management for
patients throughout the hospital
This position requires a weekly time commitment of 40-44
scheduled clinical hours, plus pager call and an additional 5-10 hours per week that is spent in
nonscheduled clinical activities such as preoperative and postoperative assessment, consultation
with attending anesthesiologists and non-clinical activities including case presentations,
educational sessions, group meetings, administrative responsibilities, etc. Holiday, weekend and
night call responsibilities are required and are shared by the entire group. Additional
responsibilities include participation in staff development meetings, clinical teaching of basic
anesthesia skills to medical students, non-anesthesia residents and paramedic students. It is
expected that clinical anesthetists participate in institutional and departmental educational
programs both in a learning and teaching capacity throughout their career at UW.
