License/certification:
Current Registered Nurse License for the State of Wisconsin is required.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum one year nursing experience. Excellent IV skills and strong interest in clinical research.
Experience working within an oncology setting and administering chemotherapy is strongly
preferred. Experience with research methods and clinical settings preferred. The candidate must
have strong communication skills with the ability to work with patients and researchers.
Hepatitis B vaccination or proof of prior vaccination will be required at the time of
employment.
TB testing will be required at the time of
employment.
Principal duties:
Specific duties include:
The Clinical Nurse specialist will work closely with the program
manager and investigators to coordinate and carry out research activities and determine eligibility
and recruitment for Palliative Care Clinical Trials, Breast Cancer Clinical Trials, and related
clinical research studies.
Specific duties include:
-Provide nursing care, including
but not limited to symptom management, patient education, toxicity assessment, psychosocial
support, and phlebotomy
-Administration of study specific medications and titration of study
specific medications as directed by the physician
-Work with members of the Palliative Care
research team, UW clinic staff, and staff at hospice sites, to participate in the daily conduct of
Palliative Care research activities, including the sharing of skills and knowledge with
collaborative staff, the clinic community, patients and their families
-Collaborate with all
members of the Palliative Care research team to meet research goals and expectations. Act to
maximize the scientific and clinical outcomes of each protocol and provide clinical representation
for organized responses to meet anticipated program needs.
-Maintain knowledge of current
protocols, and facilitate protocol management by collecting and evaluating subject specific data,
assisting data monitors, and implementation of sponsor requested changes
-Determine, analyze,
and intervene to meet the specialized educational needs of patients and their families
participating in Palliative clinical trials
-Work with investigators and study personnel to
identify and evaluate Serious Adverse Events. In the event of a Serious Adverse Event, complete
and submit both written and verbal communication to the appropriate regulatory agencies within
protocol specified timelines
-Develop study specific information sheets, source documents and
data gathering forms
-Other tasks as assigned by the research program manager.
The Nurse
Specialist is expected to follow the policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards for excellence
and professionalism established by the UWCCC and the University of Wisconsin. Additionally, this
position will assure that all clinical and laboratory research activity adheres to Federal,
University of Wisconsin, and UWCCC policies, procedures and
requirements.
