Degree and area of specialization:
MS required - prefer degree in Biology/Zoology/Botany. Ph.D. preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Excellent management, instruction, and communications skills required.
Proficiency in
laboratory implementation and computer applications (word processing, database spreadsheet
programs, presentation software and electronic mail) are needed for use on a daily basis.
Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivation and dedication to maintaining quality
undergraduate biology education required.
Experience with educational technology, academic
assessment, web technology desirable.
Knowledge of and familiarity with campus academic
resources
recommended.
Principal duties:
Logistical support for Zoology/Botany 151/152. Support lecture, laboratory and discussion
sections, multiple faculty members, and teaching assistants for at least 200-250 students each
semester.
- Develop and prepare materials and questions for discussion sections each
week
- Train and mentor teaching assistants, including at least one 2-3 hour meeting per week
and informal meetings as needed throughout the week.
- Assist faculty with exam preparation,
scheduling needs, and coordinating the use of instructional technology during three lectures per
week.
- Match Biology 151 students with potential faculty mentors for the Mentored Research
Project lab option in Biology 152 and review project proposals for 30 to 40 students in Biology
152.
- Advise students on course material, scheduling needs, and problems with exams.

Prepare materials for each week's lab, maintain the lab and its equipment, and order supplies.
- Work closely with the other Biology 151-152 Course Coordinators to develop new course curricula
and maintain a high standard of undergraduate biology education
- Assist in the development and
revision of lab exercises
- Maintain class roster, manage/maintain and report student course
grades, maintain section-level Learn @ UW website, respond to student questions in person and by
email.
- Other duties as assigned.
This position also includes 4 weeks (one month) of
summer
employment
Additional Information:
This is a highly demanding and independent position which requires schedule flexibility and some weekend and evening work.
