Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required, preferably in biological science; Master's degree preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least one year of experience advising undergraduates in a higher education setting preferred.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to work effectively with students, staff and faculty from diverse backgrounds and/or with diverse personalities is essential.
Ability to exercise judgment in student academic affairs and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Strong computer skills (email, internet, office applications, student records database, etc).
Experience in working with data and statistics preferred; ability to develop queries to collect appropriate data, and present results with accuracy and clarity.
Strong verbal, interpersonal, organizational and written skills
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
Self-motivated and able to multi-task efficiently and effectively

Principal duties:

ADVISING- 50%
Undergraduate advisor for 380 majors in the Zoology Department. Advise prospective students (and their parents), new and continuing majors, transfer, non-traditional students and honors students as to specific requirements of the major as well as department, college and university requirements and related graduate/professional school requirements. Advise students in course content.
Recommend electives based on student's area(s) of interest. Advise students about other educational opportunities, internships, graduate programs and career options.
Assist students in identifying faculty who could supervise independent study projects and honors theses.
Coordinate evaluation of course equivalencies for study abroad courses and transfer courses from other institutions.
Assist students with problem solving, crisis intervention, and identifying/addressing concerns that affect academic performance. Advise and/or refer students to other campus level student services such as Cross-College Advising, Student Financial Aid, Career Advising and Planning Services, McBurney Center, and Counseling Center.
Develop familiarity with UW-Madison policies and procedures, as well as academic programs and student services.

ADMINISTRATIVE- 20%
Serve as member of the Zoology Instructional Programs Committee, participate in meetings and committee work. Assist the Committee in conducting periodic review of the Zoology major and provide administrative support implementing changes in the major.
Edit and maintain the Zoology section of the L&S online undergraduate bulletin. Maintain the Undergraduate page on the Zoology Department website. Disseminate information about internship and job announcements, academic deadlines, campus events and opportunities.
Maintain student records relevant to major declarations, degree summaries, transcripts, and Deans actions.
Learn and use campus records systems such as ISIS , DARS and the data warehouse.
Prepare timetable, plan and schedule classes, managing online data entry and updates of departmental instructional report.
Monitor enrollment process, set course requisites and enrollment limits, open and close sections as needed.
Serve as advisor to the Undergraduate Zoological Society

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT- 30%
Interpret and apply university rules and regulations in a way that allows academic flexibility within the limits of department/college/university requirements
Assist faculty in understanding current major requirements and L&S undergraduate policies.
Represent the Department on various College and University committees, including the L&S Advisors Consortium and the BioAdvisors Group
Provide input to the Department Honors program
Maintain an email list for department majors .
Implement annual instructional assessment exercises for graduate and undergraduate programs. Develop new assessment tools and processes. Report results to departmental and campus committees.
Participate in Zoology departmental committees as assigned by the Chair.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
