Requires a minimum BA/BS degree, MS preferred. Area of specialization in a science discipline preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Experience in higher education or administration. Skills required: excellent verbal and written communication; experience interacting with colleagues, scientists, administrators, and regulatory agencies; ability to create, implement, and carry out project plans; comprehensive understanding of university research and ethics; ability to be flexible in work assignments; independent problem solving and analytical abilities; comprehensive working knowledge of computing environments/software; and strengths in organization, prioritization, reasoning/logic, and mathematics. Experience in providing training and educational programs to diverse groups. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative, collegial team environment.

Principal duties:

This position is a member of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Research Division whose mission is to facilitate research in CALS, striving to help Investigators meet compliance regulations and to foster the ethical stewardship of research funds and sponsor expectations. The Research Division has administrative responsibility for all aspects of extramural research support in CALS.

Under the direction of the Associate and Assistant Deans for Research, this position is responsible for research compliance and oversight for CALS. This position will interface with UW faculty/staff, administrators, and institutional research compliance programs and staff throughout the campus, the Graduate School Office of Research Policy, Legal Services, and Research and Sponsored Programs. In addition, this position will develop, implement, and maintain programs and educational materials for a variety of compliance areas throughout the College.

50% Oversee the responsibilities for research compliance and oversight involving all extramural support for CALS including:
- Use independent judgment to interpret, analyze, and apply Federal, State, and University guidelines to promote ethical practices in research as related to outside financial interests and ensure compliance with those regulations by faculty and staff investigators.
- Apply a comprehensive understanding of research regulations, ethics, and guidelines specific to compliance regulations to analyze disclosures, disclosure modifications, conflicts of interests, and related management plans.
- Analyze disclosures, conflict of interest/management plans, research protocols/approvals, and related CALS compliance actions.
- Review all CALS proposals, awards, and other support for compliance specific to human subjects, animal care, biological safety, and other compliance related issues.
- Ensure that CALS responds to research compliance related issues in a timely manner.
- Act as a liaison and maintain communications on research compliance and oversight issues for CALS.
- Analyze data tracking needs, create standard reporting formats, and assist in the development and maintenance of research compliance databases.

15% Serve as Division Effort Coordinator and oversee effort reporting and certification for CALS.
- Provide guidance and oversight in regard to compliance of provisions as detailed in OMB's Circular A-21 regarding effort certification and other relevant sponro requirements.
- Provide clear direction and guidance to faculty/staff and administrators in regard to sponsor and campus effort reporting and certification principles, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure that college/school responsibilities as defined in UW Effort Guidelines are met/enforced.

15% Oversee the continuing AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) Accreditation requirements and recertification efforts for CALS.
- Direct the planning, preparation, collection of data, writing of reports/resubmission documents, and on-site visits of AAALAC.
- Identify facility and procedural needs to meet accreditation standards of excellence.
- Facilitate policy development associated with facility workers and animal facilities to meet and maintain accreditation standards of excellence.
- With CALS ACUC members, review, recommend modifications, and approve standard operating procedures for all animal units.
- Oversee development of written emergency and disaster plans to meet and maintain accreditation standards of excellence.
- Work with UW Occupational Health and Safety personnel to conduct health and safety risk assessments to meet and maintain accreditation standards of excellence.
- Oversee continued facility and animal care and use standards throughout CALS.

15% Apply an understanding of the University, State, and Federal research compliance regulations and guidelines. Provide education and training for CALS investigators, researchers, faculty/staff, and administrators.
- Develop written guidelines, educational materials, training modules, and related tools for CALS investigators, researchers, faculty/staff, and administrators.
- Contribute to planning and presenting education programs for CALS.
- Document research compliance procedures.
- Develop and continually update the content regarding research compliance on CALS Research Division website and within training are related materials utilized by CALS.
- Oversee compliance related internal audits, site visits, and accreditation related activities for CALS.
- Coordinate campus-wide efforts to improve compliance management, developing and maintaining working relationships with compliance staff throughout campus.

5% Oversee responsibilities for specific tasks delegated by the Assistant Dean for Research (e.g., gifts--in-kind, limited PI status requests/approvals). Work closely with faculty/staff, committees, subcommittees, or special project working groups within CALS.
