Degree and area of specialization:
BA/BS required, MS preferred. Area of specialization should be in biology, medical, human resource management, business administration or related field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minumum of 5 years experience in overall program/project administration preferably in a scientific or academic deaprtment setting. Demonstrated human resource and budgetary experience are essential. It is expected that applicants will have previous involvement in strategic planning and policy development. Familiarity with preparation and submission of federal funding proposals and the required post-award oversight and obligations are expected. Knowledge of University policies and procedures is highly desirable. Excellent communication and organizational skills are a must and supervisory experience is preferred.
Principal duties:
The activities of the University of Wisconsin Biotechnology Center (UWBC) are a synergistic blend
of research, service and outreach. The mission of the UWBC is to maximize the benefits of
biotechnology to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin System, State and the
Nation. Our aims are to provide access to state-of-the-art technologies to facilitate research,
perform multidisciplinary genomic research and offer comprehensive outreach effort that includes
the general public.
This position reports directly to the UWBC Director Michael R. Sussman
and provides support to the scientific endeavors of the UWBC and its staff. The Assistant Director
is the nexus between the various UWBC units, Graduate School offices, other colleges and schools,
other centers, and faculty and researchers campus-wide. The UWBC is a highly visible center within
the University and State, and interacts often with the public and private sectors at various
levels.
Overall, the Assistant Director will oversee day-to-day operational management and
policy implementation. Specifically, the Assistant Director will have responsibility in the
following areas:
* Actively participate in strategic planning initiatives and policy development
to support the mission and activities of the UWBC.
* Oversee the financial management of
approximately $11 million in state, federal, and private funding annually. The Assistant Director
works closely with IT staff to assure sound fiscal reporting and accessible operational practices
within the core facilities and fiscal management of grants and contracts.
* Responsible for
human resources development and management and ensuring a climate conducive to productivity and
wellbeing of over 140 faculty and staff. The Assistant Director will directly supervise
administrative support personnel.
* Responsible for offering assistance to faculty and staff in
all matters of pre- and post-award management including assuring compliance in fulfilling all
contractual obligations.
* Formulate and respond to internal and external requests for center
operational data. this may include current resource usage, projections for future budgetary needs,
preparation of annual reports etc. Develop and design publicity initiatives.
* Oversee major
and minor building projects and renovations in conjunction with the building superintendent. Serve
as liaison to State, University, and private
contractors.
