Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's degree required. Master¿s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Economics, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering, or related advanced study preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Demonstrated experience communicating and writing to diverse audiences, e.g. organized labor,
community and environmental groups, public and private sectors. At least 3 years of professional
experience working with the public required. At least 7 years of experience to be considered at the
Sr. level. Successful candidate will be able to work independently and travel throughout the Great
Lakes region.
Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the
following:
1) Demonstrated professional experience working in manufacturing or industrial
extension, supply chains, and/or in industrial relations or manufacturing conversion.
2)
Familiarity with local, state and national energy and environmental policy and issues.
3)
Demonstrated professional experience working with or for labor unions.
Principal duties:
The Center on Wisconsin Strategy (COWS) is a national research policy center and field laboratory
for high-road economic development. COWS' work is collaborative, experimental, and evidence-driven.
Working with business, government, labor, and communities COWS tests the effectiveness of new ideas
in high-road economic development and disseminates those with promise. COWS believes that the best
way to predict the future is to start making it, particularly in our states and metro regions.
This position will primarily work on our project to link clean energy and good jobs in the
new energy economy and will be involved in two facets of this project:
1) Serving as staff on
"manufacturing conversion" project including research, writing and dissemination of reports on how
to promote the conversion of existing manufacturing to renewable/efficient products and components;
and outreach to business, labor and the environmental community to promote such
conversion.
2) Serving as staff on "labor in the new energy economy" project --including
reaching out to labor unions throughout the Great Lakes region to educate them on new energy
options and opportunities, and to bring labor concerns and priorities to the table at broader
energy and environmental forums.
We are seeking a well trained professional outreach
specialist who will:
70% of time:
- Research, develop, recommend and communicate
COWS' research findings and policy options on Great Lakes clean energy issues, especially as they
relate to organized labor and economic development.
- Draft reports, briefing papers, press
releases and other communications on Great Lakes clean energy options, including online resources.
- Travel throughout the Great Lakes region communicating COWS' research findings and policy
options on key clean energy issues.
- Organize and participate in meetings and/or conferences
on the role of labor in the new energy economy and/or manufacturing conversion
20% of
Time:
- Attend internal meetings and discussions related to COWS' Great Lakes
work.
- Participate and collaborate with other regional policy institutions on labor and
manufacturing modernization issues.
10% of Time:
- Work on special projects as they
develop.
A period of evaluation will be
required.
