Working title:
Microbial Bioenergy Scientist
Official title:
SENIOR SCIENTIST(E10BN) or ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST(E10FN) or ASSISTANT SCIENTIST(E10LN)
Degree and area of specialization:
PhD in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or related areas. Significant knowledge of bacterial metabolism, physiology, genomics, molecular genetics, and synthetic microbiology.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Minimum of three-five years experience in postdoctoral research in microbial metabolism, genomics, gene expression, or synthetic microbiology. Written and oral presentation skills and excellent interpersonal skills are essential.
Principal duties:
The successful candidate will join the recently launched Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) to help conduct and oversee research into constructing and analyzing microbial strains capable of efficient conversion of biomass to biofuels. Duties will include identifying research problems, designing research methods, and presenting results for publication. A particular emphasis will be on microbial conversion of lignocellulose to ethanol by E. coli and also by other microbes. The person hired will conduct and oversee research on E. coli ethanologenesis and will act as liaison to ensure efficient communication among several interrelated projects on microbial ethanologenesis. The research to be conducted or overseen will include (1) collecting organism-wide proteomic, metabolic, gene expression, and lipidomic profiles of bioenergy microbes; (2) working with researchers in computational modeling to help build, evaluate, and use integrated metabolic and gene expression models of microbial biomass conversations; and (3) microbial directed evolution experiments to identify new microbial strains with enhanced bioenergy characteristics. The GLBRC is one of three Department of Energy centers to conduct fundamental, genomics-based research on microbial and plant systems required to realize the national need for low-cost biofuels. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a key role in a keystone research center for the first great national challenge of the 21st century, sustainable energy independence.
