Degree and area of specialization:
Ph.D. in Consumer Science, Family Resource Management, Family/Consumer Economics, or related fields including but not limited to Economics, Sociology, Social Work, Business, or Public Policy. Specialization in area related to family economic wellbeing, consumer issues, resource management, or sustainable consumption issues.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Teaching and research experience in one or more of the following areas: family economic security, family resource management, consumer issues, consumer finance, household economics, sustainable consumption issues, and/or related policy areas. A record of scholarship or demonstrated potential for scholarship suitable for tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Principal duties:
Positions hold 9-month appointments in the Department of Consumer Science, School of Human Ecology.
Successful applicants will be expected to maintain a strong program of research and
publication in their field. Responsibilities include contributing to the development and growth of
graduate training in Family Economics and Consumer Behavior; undergraduate teaching in Personal
Finance and/or Consumer Affairs programs; and outreach initiatives. Potential courses include
consumer finance, retirement and estate planning, and others in the Personal Finance program;
consumer and the market; family economics; consumer information; sustainability issues in
consumption and retailing. One or more of the positions will have responsibility for ongoing
oversight of the undergraduate Personal Finance program including accreditation with Certified
Financial Planner Board of Standards, outreach to the profession, and possible extension of
Personal Finance program to graduate level. Depending on interest and expertise, one of the
positions may be integrated with UW-Extension and carry formal outreach responsibilities related to
family resource management and family economic wellbeing, including providing leadership in
developing, implementing and evaluating research-based education programs in these areas.
Responsibilities for all positions include teaching undergraduate and graduate students, advising
graduate students, participating in faculty governance and administration, and performing
university and community service.
Additional Information:
The Department of Consumer Science develops and disseminates information on the
ways in which the interactions among consumers, business, and government can enhance the interests
and wellbeing of consumers, families, and communities. We focus on various dimensions of wellbeing
including economic/financial security, consumer empowerment, health, food security, housing
security, sustainability, and the public policy that affects those dimensions of wellbeing. The
program is interdisciplinary, and current faculty have degrees in diverse fields including
economics, sociology, retailing, social work, and consumer
science.
