Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
The chair holder:
1) must hold a tenured faculty position in an education, social science, or
humanities department;
2) must have achieved a distinguished scholarly status in reading and
literacy;
3) must have an outstanding publication record of nationally recognized
quality;
4) must be a valued teacher;
5) it is desirable that s/he have experience with
elementary or secondary schools and interest in working in schools and with classroom teachers;
and
6) it is desirable that s/he have experience working with diverse
populations.
Principal duties:
The Morgridge Chair in reading and literacy is a senior, tenured faculty position in the
Department of Curriculum and Instruction. It is open to distinguished scholars in education,
the social sciences, and the humanities. The chair holder will provide intellectual leadership
in the Literacy Studies Area of the Department by conducting outstanding research in reading and
literacy, teaching graduate and undergraduate students, and providing local, state, and national
professional service.
A generous annual allocation for research assistance, travel,
summer salary supplementation, equipment, and supplies will be provided to the recipient. The
chair is renewable every five years.
The School of Education has eight departments and
approximately 150 tenured and tenure-track faculty. It houses the Wisconsin Center for Education
Research, one of the oldest and largest educational research centers in the world. The Center's
external support for the fiscal 2006-2007 year totaled $30 million. Center faculty are from
the School of Education and a variety of departments across the campus.
The chair holder
will:
1) teach courses in reading and/or literacy to graduate students inside and outside of
the Department of Curriculum and Instruction;
2) assist in the preparation of teachers by
teaching undergraduate courses in reading and literacy;
3) continue to provide national
leadership in research;
4) provide the School of Education with intellectual leadership in
reading and literacy; and
5) provide services and leadership to the university, public, and
profession.
