Bachelor's Degree required; preferably in computer science, information systems, or related field with relevant work experience.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
One or more years of relevant database development experience is strongly preferred. Successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to develop web-based database applications, as well as demonstrated ability to write SQL queries and manage databases. Previous experience with Ruby/Ruby on Rails and application development in an academic health center or research institution is highly desirable.

In addition, it is preferred that candidates have experience working with Ruby, PHP, JavaScript, Ajax, CSS, HTML, and JSON, as well as with version control (git or svn). Experience working with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle), as well as a basic working knowledge of 'nix command line, including ability to setup local development and production environments is preferred.
Principal duties:
The Department of Surgery is a large academic department at UW-Madison with over 500 employees and over 90 faculty engaged in a wide range of clinical, educational, research and administrative activities.

The Department of Surgery is seeking a self-motivated individual to take on a variety of tasks related to Research Programming such as conceptualizing, designing, implementing, and maintaining databases for faculty, researchers, and staff. The Research Programmer is responsible for applying expertise in programming procedures for complex research and administrative projects; investigates and analyzes feasibility and project requirements and makes recommendations for the design or redesign of programs and develops programming specifications; plans for full range of programming actions to produce several interrelated but different systems from numerous and diverse data elements; solves difficult programming problems and provides technical expertise.

In addition, the incumbent will consult with faculty and staff to develop databases for research applications, proposals, and protocols; recommend hardware and software purchases to comply with Department guidelines; and identify, propose and execute research projects aimed at developing new biomedical computer technology and applications. Uses knowledge of pertinent system software, computer equipment research processes, and regulations.
  Additional Information:
 The incumbent must possess the initiative to make quick technical decisions and the ability to handle several projects concurrently and meet deadlines.
