Job Summary:This is an entry level position providing technical support to the daily operational needs of the Large Animal and the Operating Room Areas of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital(VMTH). Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

1) Learns and develops proficiency of technical skills utilized in assigned areas for quality patient care.

2) Participates in review of inpatient cases/treatments and gives assistance where needed.

3) Develops the ability to anticipate and initiate the needs of Clinical Faculty and staff during procedures/daily operational needs.

4) Develops sharp memory/recall abilities in set?up and preparation for surgical procedures done at varied intervals.

The work is performed under close supervision.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.40%Responsible for providing assistance to Clinical Faculty during procedures and primary care in the Large Animal Area. Assumes increasing responsibility for the following technical duties as skill and proficiency develops:
1.Restrains varied domestic, special species
2.Prepares and administers oral, topical and injectable medications as prescribed
3.Assists in receiving and discharging of patients to include loading and unloading
4.Assists in recording of client case history information
5.Gains proficiency in maintaining accurate, concise medical and treatment records (patient history taking, TPR, minor laboratory results, bodily functions/appetite, and treatments/medications, etc.)
6.Assists in special diagnostic procedures as requested/needed
7.Performs routine medical nursing skills including, but not limited to: I.V. and urinary catheter placement, hydro and physical therapy, minor laboratory testing, specimen collection, bandaging techniques, bathing and grooming).
8.Performs patient preps as directed/requested for pre-surgical and diagnostic procedures
9.Frequently observes animals under care, records and reports to clinician any animals displaying abnormal or concerning behavior
10.Initiates and monitors prescribed food (special diets) and water supplies to patients; assures patient cleanliness and comfort
   
B.30%Assumes increasing responsibility for the following Operating Room technical duties as skill and proficiency develop:
1.Develops technical working knowledge of procedures utilized in the daily operation of the surgical areas by: a) familiarizing and following established procedures and guidelines of the area (i.e. dress code), b) maintaining aseptic conditions in all aspects of OR functions necessary to patient care.
2.Assists in patient restraint and preparation of varied domestic, exotic and wildlife species.
3.Provides necessary assistance with surgical set-up: a) oversees surgical suite for cleanliness, b) insures proper equipment and instrument packs needed are clean, sterile and in working order, c) provides appropriate sterilized linen, gown and drape packed, d) anticipates potential supply/equipment needs associated with surgery and insures easy access
4.Provides necessary assistance with surgical clean-up: a) assures proper post procedural clean-up of the surgical suite and equipment is complete, b) follows clean-up guidelines for separating and forwarding instruments/equipment, linen and miscellaneous items to the proper area for decontamination and cleaning.
5.Provides support to Central Supply activities as needed. Works with area personnel to perform and assure proper maintenance and care of equipment. Assists in supply distribution and inventory activities of the area. Performs actual cleaning, reprocessing and sterilizing tasks associated with the area.
   
C.10%Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory of area supplies and cleanliness of facility
1.Monitors use of supplies and restocks as necessary
2.Cleans area, equipment, instruments, and carts after use in procedures and when necessary
   
D.15%Assists with area and hospital record keeping responsibilities
1.Records and completes necessary patient data for surgical cases.
2.Participates in correlating request form data to assure scheduling needs can be met.
3.Completes area and hospital patient billing forms.
4.Follows inventory monitoring and control methods for the area and completes proper forms.
5.Contributes to discussions and revisions of procedural charges
   
E.5%Participates in technical and support duties as assigned:
1.In all areas of the VMTH in both animal contact and non-animal contact related duties (e.g. Medical Records, Reception Area, Central Supply, Pharmacy, Clinical Pathology).
2.Teaching and research laboratories (to include assisting and organizational responsibilities).
3.Working flexible, on-call hours and variable shifts.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of standards for quality animal nursing care and proper procedures associated with small and large animal patients.
  2. Knowledge of complications associated with pre- and post-operative care; appropriate reactions to and requirements for each complication.
  3. Knowledge of proper pre-operative patient preparation and positioning.
  4. Knowledge of aseptic principles and materials reprocessing techniques.
  5. Knowledge of anesthesia techniques and principles.
  6. Knowledge of equipment set-up/maintenance and instruments used in utilized in Small and Large Animal Areas.
  7. Knowledge of client relations, history taking, management and maintenance of legal medical records.
  8. Knowledge of inventory, record keeping and billing procedures utilized in a veterinary hospital.
  9. Ability to function calmly in stressful, life and death situations.
