Job Summary:This is a Journey level Sheet Metal Worker. Under general supervision perform all the duties of a Sheet Metal Worker including layout, fabrication and installation of sheet metal projects. In addition, this position may direct and instruct apprentices, helpers and other assistants.

Goals and Worker Activities

A.90%Fabrication and Installation of Sheet Metal Work
1.Fabricate and lay out sheet metal in shop from a blueprint to include forming and assembling.
2.Assemble and install heating and ventilating work on the job.
3.Fabricate and install all work listed on plans as architectural sheet metal, i.e. gutters, metal roofs, flashing, tin decks, gravel stop, coping, etc.
4.Fabricate and/or install specialty work, i.e. lockers, metal decking, or other sheet metal as requested.
5.Assemble components by welding.
6.Insulate ductwork.
7.Air balance HVAC systems.
8.Inspect roofs for deficiencies. Repair or replace clay tile and asphalt roofs and EPDM or other roofs as needed. Apply roof coating for repair of flat roofs.
9.Read blueprints
10.Measure materials for project.
11.Design and layout work in shop or on job.
12.Keep supervisor informed on progress.
   
B.10%Other Shop Support
1.Erect scaffolding and hoisting equipment.
2.Put away stock, etc.
3.Direct and instruct apprentices, helpers, and other assistants.
4.Clean up in shop and at job site.
5.Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the sheet metal trade.
  2. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the trade.
  3. Knowledge of all types of sheet metal installations, their common and unusual breakdowns, and standard repair procedures.
  4. Knowledge of welding to include TIG and MIG.
  5. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, air balancing.
  6. Knowledge of equipment used in air balancing such as short ridge flow hood and hot wire anemometer, and ability to take static pressure readings.
  7. Knowledge and identification of asbestos and appropriate safety precautions.
  8. Skill in reading and interpreting work from plans, involved drawings, and sketches.
  9. Skill in good communication and interpersonal skills.
  10. Ability to exercise a strong sense of priority and time management.
  11. Ability to work with, polish and finish stainless steel.
  12. Ability to direct and instruct apprentices, helpers and other assistants in the trade.
  13. Ability to learn quickly and acquire necessary skills to successfully perform all tasks at the Journey level.
  14. Ability to maintain a professional and service-oriented relationship with customers and co-workers.
  15. Ability to be creative, flexible, self-motivated, and quality oriented.
  16. Ability to maintain courteous and effective communications with customers, co-workers, and supervisor.
  17. Ability to improve operations by contributing ideas, solving problems, assisting and motivating others, and adapting to new ideas and procedures.
  18. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
  19. Ability to present a neat, clean appearance at all times.
  20. Ability to perform physical labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects at least 75 pounds, and frequent bending/stooping/twisting/etc.
  21. Ability and willingness to work out of an aerial truck and learn to operate.
  22. Ability and willingness to work on, and at the edge of, roofs of varying heights.
  23. Ability and willingness to work in the same room as animals (cats, dogs, monkeys, rats, mice, birds, reptiles, etc.) for extended periods of time.
  24. Ability and willingness to wear safety clothing and devices when required.
  25. Ability to maintain a valid Wisconsin commercial driver's license (CDL) and a motor vehicle record that meets UW Risk Management Standards to drive State of Wisconsin owned vehicles (non-essential function).
