Job Summary:This position is in DoIT's Systems Engineering group and reports to the group manager under general supervision. This position will also take some direction from the Windows team lead. This position has the responsibility for the development and technical support of complex Windows systems including but not limited to Active Directory authentication, Windows network management, Windows IIS and various other Windows services. It will work closely with vendor staff, other SE staff, Network Services staff, Data Center staff and Help Desk staff in resolving system problems. This position coordinates and supports scheduled tasks and system backups and restores, plans, organizes and conducts upgrades to the operational systems (in conjunction with the development teams, vendors and other DoIT groups as needed). It serves as focal point of security planning and practices for SE supported Windows servers. The position responsibilities include planning, installation, programming and development of multiple Windows based systems which include large servers, server clusters and virtual servers.

Typical duties of this position include:
-Ensuring the smooth operation and management of complex Windows systems.
-Consulting with internal and external customers to determine the best way to meet their Windows platform needs.
-Preparing cost and system specifications in response to customer requests for Windows systems.
-Analyzing requirements for new Windows systems and upgrades to systems managed for existing customers.
-Documenting procedures for systems management duties for Operations staff.

 

Goals and Worker Activities

A.50%Windows Systems Support
1.Install, patch and maintain servers and clustered server environments running the Windows operating system.
2.Build, configure, install and maintain various software packages on Windows systems.
3.Document and communicate system enhancements or changes utilizing formal change management system.
4.Use IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backup client or other enterprise backup software to backup and restore files.
5.Install, configure and replace various server components such network cards, disk drives, power supplies and memory.
6.Perform user management tasks such as creating accounts, changing passwords, etc.
7.Configure and manage storage volumes and file systems.
8.Analyze and respond to output from server monitoring systems.
   
B.30%Consulting and Documentation
1.Interact with customers and users to define requirements for new and existing systems.
2.Create documentation for both end users and other system administrators.
   
C.10%Personal/Professional Development
1.Attend DoIT and external training sessions and industry conferences in topics closely related to assigned projects and responsibilities. Read professional literature on the same.
2.Maintain current awareness of trends, methods and technological advances in the industry and profession, especially as they relate to assigned projects and responsibilities, as well as to obtain technical assistance.
3.Disseminate information from these activities to others in DoIT.

1.Support and propose technical, operating and organizational standards to contribute to DoIT's effectiveness.
2.Carry out special assignments to respond to the needs of DoIT and campus. Prepare special reports, reviews, and recommendations as requested.
3.Participate in appropriate staff meetings; read pertinent DoIT documents; participate in necessary task forces, committees and service teams.
   

Knowledge and Skills

  1. Advanced knowledge of the Windows operating system.
  2. Knowledge of systems programming principles, techniques such as Microsoft batch, PowerShell and VBS scripting.
  3. Analytic problem solving skills and problem management techniques.
  4. Knowledge of Windows client connectivity methods using Microsoft Windows Networking (net use), Remote Desktop (RDP).
  5. Knowledge of network and host based firewalling.
  6. Knowledge of trends and developments in Information Technology.
  7. Knowledge of Windows user and group management concepts.
  8. Knowledge of Windows process management concepts and tools.
  9. Familiarity with hardware RAID management.
  10. Familiarity with Storage Area Networks and Enterprise Storage technology.
  11. Strong written and oral communication skills.
  12. Strong customer service skills.
  13. Knowledge of IT security best practices, patching, anti-virus, intrusion detection, etc.
  14. Knowledge of Internet clients/servers/protocols, including Microsoft IIS (HTTP/HTTPS), FTP/SFTP.
  15. Knowledge of basic Windows networking (TCP/IP and DNS) client connectivity and configuration.
