HIRING ORGANIZATION: UW Madison-Police Department. The University of Wisconsin Police Department is the 3rd largest enforcement agency in Dane County. Using state of the art equipment, the department provides complete police and security services to the UW Madison campus. The department is comprised of 65 sworn personnel and 50 support and security staff. Well qualified applicants will have customer service, phone, and computer experience or training, excellent oral and written communication skills, and have the ability to do multiple tasks quickly and without error. Knowledge of public safety or prior work in a University setting is desirable.

SALARY: Starting salary is $32,543 annually ($15.586 hourly) plus an excellent benefits package*. This position is pay schedule 36, range 42. This position is included in the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Association. Current state employee's pay will be set in accordance with pay upon appointment provisions outlined in the contract for PR 36-42. A one-year probationary period is required.

Must be able to type 25 wpm or more.

JOB DUTIES: Receive, evaluate and act upon information and requests concerning public safety, law enforcement or the University in general. Handle communications via radio, telephone, computer, in person or any other medium. Accurately interpret computer responses and take appropriate action. Coordinate the activities between University Police and Security units, other law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical entities and other governmental agencies. The work of the person in this position affects the services rendered to the public and outside agencies, the perception of the Department and the University, the safety of the field officers and the overall work of overall Departmental personnel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Communication skills; telephone systems and communication via the phone; extensive skill in listening and interviewing skills; ability to make instantaneous decisions based on minimal information; skill in controlling emotions and ability to work under stress; computer and keyboarding skills; organize, maintain records, file and utilize complex information files; and issuing receipts and handling money.

SPECIAL NOTE: Applicants must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays.
