LOCATION: Madison, WI

HIRING ORGANIZATION: UW-Madison currently has vacancies in several locations on campus and throughout the state working with a variety of animals including large animals, small animals and primates. Work schedules vary by position; some positions have weekend hours available. These positions provide career advancement opportunities and excellent benefits.

SALARY: Starting pay for the Animal Research Technician is $11.642 per hour (pay schedule/range 06-09) and for the Animal Research Technician Obj./Intermed. is $12.592 per hour (pay schedule/range 06-10), plus excellent benefits. These classifications are included in the Technical Bargaining Unit. A six-month probationary period is required.

JOB DUTIES: Perform a variety of animal care duties; administer medications and treatments; assist with social housing and enrichment of animals; monitor animal and room environments. Select, mix and prepare diets; feed and water all animals under care, including hand feeding of infants. Recognize animal behavior and symptoms that indicate an illness or accident. Maintain sanitation standards by mixing disinfectants and cleaning animal rooms, pens and cages and/or accessory equipment and operating necessary cleaning machines. Maintain necessary records including daily health observations and census; perform data entry; maintain and order supplies.

Special Requirement: Ability to lift 50 pounds and stand on feet for long periods of time; must be TB negative.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Ability to follow oral and written instructions; knowledge of basic animal care. At the Animal Research Technician Obj./Intermediate level, required knowledge includes animal care and handling techniques, animal behavior and animal care regulations (i.e. Animal Welfare Act); sanitation methods and requirements; safety rules and precautions; basic computer skills.
